Care Guide
Care Guide
Last updated: May 26, 2026
This Care Guide explains how to preserve your malvêtu garment with the right handling, washing, drying, and storage.
A garment should be treated with attention. Fabric, print, shape, and finish can change when exposed to heat, friction, harsh detergents, careless washing, or improper drying. Good care helps preserve the appearance, structure, and wear of the piece over time.
Always follow the care label attached to your garment. If the care label differs from this guide, the care label should be followed first.
This Care Guide should be read together with our Size Guide, Returns & Exchanges, Refund Policy, Shipping & Delivery, and Terms of Service.

2. The first rule of care
Read the garment label before washing, drying, ironing, or cleaning the item.
The care label is specific to the garment. It may include instructions about:
- washing temperature
- hand wash or machine wash
- drying method
- ironing temperature
- bleaching
- dry cleaning
- washing with similar colors
- print protection
- special handling
The garment label takes priority because different products may use different fabrics, prints, constructions, or finishes.
3. Inspect the garment before first wear
When your order arrives, inspect the item before wearing, washing, altering, or removing tags where applicable.
Check:
- product
- size
- color
- visible condition
- seams
- labels
- packaging
- any visible damage or issue
If something appears wrong, contact client care before wearing or washing the item.

Include your order number, full name, email address used at checkout, clear photos, and a short description of the issue.
4. General T-shirt care
Unless the garment label states otherwise, the following guidance is recommended for T-shirts and printed apparel.
Wash inside out
Turn the garment inside out before washing.
This helps reduce friction on the outer surface and helps protect printed areas.
Wash with similar colors
Wash with similar colors, especially for dark, black, washed, grey, off-white, or strongly dyed garments.
This helps reduce color transfer and keeps lighter garments away from darker dye release.
Use cold or low-temperature washing
A cold or low-temperature wash is generally gentler on fabric, color, print, and garment shape.
Avoid high heat unless the garment label specifically permits it.
Use mild detergent
Use a mild detergent suitable for apparel.
Avoid harsh detergents, strong stain removers, or chemical-heavy washing products unless the garment label permits them.
Avoid bleach
Do not use bleach unless the care label expressly allows it.
Bleach can damage fabric, alter color, weaken fibers, and affect printed areas.
Avoid overloading the machine
Do not overload the washing machine.
A crowded wash increases friction, twisting, and pressure on the garment.
5. Washing printed garments
Printed garments need more careful handling.
To help preserve the print:
- wash inside out
- use cold or low-temperature washing
- wash with similar colors
- avoid bleach
- avoid harsh detergents
- avoid strong stain removers on the print
- avoid heavy friction against rough fabrics
- avoid washing with zippers, hardware, or abrasive items where possible
Printed areas may be affected by heat, friction, pressure, and improper care.
6. Drying
Drying affects the shape, surface, and longevity of a garment.
Unless the garment label states otherwise, we recommend air drying.
Preferred method
Lay flat or hang carefully to dry.
Keep the garment away from direct intense heat.
Tumble drying
Avoid tumble drying unless the garment label permits it.
High heat can affect:
- garment shape
- fabric feel
- shrinkage
- print finish
- seams
- color depth
If tumble drying is allowed on the garment label, use the lowest suitable heat setting.
7. Ironing
Always check the garment label before ironing.
If ironing is allowed:
- iron inside out
- use a low temperature where suitable
- avoid ironing directly over printed areas
- avoid steam directly on print unless the care label permits it
- place a clean cloth between the iron and garment where needed
Direct heat can damage print, alter texture, or leave marks.
8. Steam
Steam may help relax wrinkles on some garments, yet it should be used carefully.
Avoid direct steam on printed areas unless the care label permits it.
Keep the steamer at a safe distance and test carefully on a less visible area where appropriate.
9. Dry cleaning
Do not dry clean unless the garment label permits it.
Some printed or treated garments may react badly to dry-cleaning processes, solvents, or heat finishing.
If the label says dry cleaning is not recommended, follow the label.
10. Stain handling
Treat stains carefully.
Avoid rubbing aggressively, especially on printed areas.
If a stain appears:
- act early
- use a mild approach
- test any product carefully
- avoid bleach unless the label permits it
- avoid harsh stain removers on printed areas
- avoid scrubbing the print
Strong chemical products can affect the garment permanently.
11. Color care
Color can be affected by washing, sunlight, friction, detergent, and heat.
To help preserve color:
- wash with similar colors
- wash inside out
- avoid bleach
- avoid intense heat
- avoid prolonged direct sunlight when drying
- avoid leaving wet garments folded against other items
- avoid harsh detergents
Dark, black, washed, faded, grey, off-white, or strongly dyed garments may develop natural character with wear and washing.
A slight change in color over time can be part of normal garment aging.
12. Shrinkage and shape
Some fabrics may settle slightly after washing.
To reduce unwanted shrinkage or shape change:
- follow the garment label
- avoid high-temperature washing
- avoid high-heat drying
- reshape gently while damp where appropriate
- air dry where possible
- avoid stretching aggressively when wet
malvêtu does not guarantee that a garment will never shrink, stretch, fade, or change over time. Fabric is physical, and care affects its condition.
13. Heavyweight garments
Heavyweight T-shirts and denser fabrics should be handled with more care.
They may hold more water after washing and may take longer to dry.
Recommended handling:
- avoid excessive spinning where possible
- reshape gently after washing
- dry in a way that supports the garment’s shape
- avoid hanging in a way that stretches the neckline or shoulders while heavily wet
- avoid high heat
A heavier garment can feel more structured and may respond differently to washing than a lighter T-shirt.
14. Washed, faded, or vintage-effect garments
If a garment has a washed, faded, or vintage-effect finish, slight tonal differences may be part of the design and finish.
To preserve the look:
- wash inside out
- wash with similar colors
- avoid bleach
- avoid harsh stain treatment
- avoid high heat
- avoid excessive friction
The character of washed or faded garments may continue to develop through wear and care.
15. Off-white and light garments
Light garments should be washed separately or with similar light colors.
Avoid washing light garments with dark, heavily dyed, or new garments that may release dye.
Store light garments away from surfaces, bags, or materials that may transfer color.
16. Black and dark garments
Black and dark garments should be washed inside out with similar colors.
To help preserve depth:
- use mild detergent
- avoid bleach
- avoid high heat
- avoid over-washing
- avoid drying in harsh direct sunlight
Dark garments may naturally soften and develop character with repeated wear and washing.
17. Print placement and surface
Prints should be treated as part of the garment’s surface.
Avoid:
- ironing directly on print
- strong rubbing
- high heat
- harsh chemicals
- bleach
- abrasive washing
- prolonged pressure when wet
- folding hot garments directly over printed areas
If the print appears damaged before wear or washing, contact client care before using the item.
18. Storage
Store garments clean and dry.
Avoid storing garments while damp.
For longer-term storage:
- fold carefully
- avoid direct sunlight
- keep away from moisture
- avoid pressure on printed areas
- avoid contact with sharp hardware, rough surfaces, or color-transfer materials
A garment left damp, compressed, or exposed to heat can develop marks, odor, distortion, or color transfer.
19. Fragrance, deodorant, and cosmetics
Fragrance, deodorant, oils, lotions, and cosmetic products can affect fabric.
Allow such products to dry before wearing the garment.
Marks caused by fragrance, deodorant, oils, lotions, cosmetics, or personal products may affect return or exchange eligibility.
20. Bags, belts, jewelry, and friction
Repeated friction can affect fabric and print.
Be careful with:
- rough bags
- heavy backpacks
- belts
- chains
- jewelry
- sharp accessories
- abrasive outerwear
- seatbelts
- rough surfaces
Friction can cause pilling, fading, surface wear, print damage, or marks over time.
21. What to avoid
To preserve the garment, avoid:
- bleach
- harsh detergents
- high heat
- ironing directly over print
- tumble drying unless permitted by the care label
- dry cleaning unless permitted by the care label
- washing with abrasive items
- overloading the machine
- leaving wet garments folded
- aggressive scrubbing
- strong stain removers on printed areas
- prolonged direct sunlight while drying
- improper storage while damp
22. Care and return eligibility
Care affects return, exchange, and refund eligibility.
Items may be refused for discretionary return, exchange, or refund where they are:
- worn
- washed
- altered
- stained
- marked
- affected by odor
- damaged through use
- damaged by improper care
- affected by fragrance, deodorant, oils, or cosmetics
- exposed to heat, bleach, harsh detergent, or improper cleaning
- handled in a way that prevents proper inspection
This does not limit statutory rights that cannot legally be limited.
